Skiing - Björkliden & Riksgränsen

We spent last weekend in the area of Björkliden and Riksgränsen.

It's located 250 km north of the Arctic circle in Sweden.

While they're not the biggest ski destinations, they are rich in history.

We got the opportunity to follow a long with my dad and his wife on a ski-weekend, and we couldn't say no. Early Thursday morning we drove from the coast all the way up to the mountains with a car fully packed with food and gear.

Later that afternoon we arrived in Björkliden. We got a small cabin with big windows facing towards the famous "Lapporten" or "The Lapponian Gate".

Hannah and I went out for a small walk to stretch our legs after sitting in a car for five hours. The weather was amazing, +5 degrees Celcius (41 degrees Fahrenheit), almost no clouds and sunshine.

Friday was our first day of skiing. The weather, as it is in moutains, changed a lot during the day. We had everything from rain and windy conditions to sunshine. Since the weather was warm the slopes got quite slushy and you could really feel it in your thighs.

We had a pretty dramatic morning.

The evenings were spent in the cabin playing intense rounds of UNO

On saturday morning we borrowed my brother's car and drove 30 km west, to Riksgränsen. Our friends Jens & Nadia were spending their weekend mixing work and skiing in Riksgränsen so we went over to hang out with them for the day.

Luckily I got my own packhorse

The weather was even better, the snow was even slushier and the thighs felt even worse.

But hanging out in the mountains on a day like this can't be bad.

We had lunch on top of the mountain on a spot were all the snow as gone.

We had an amazing weekend filled with good food, skiing, family and friends. Next time we are in this area we will be arriving by foot after almost two months of hiking.
